Which Entrance Exams Are For You?
Many programs at the graduate level require external testing to apply.
There are several things to research when considering a graduate program. Prerequisites, costs, the school's location, academic reputation are some of the important aspects. Another aspect to consider is if your program of interest requires an entrance exam — several graduate programs require you to sit for a specific exam meant to measure your aptitudes and knowledge of various subjects.
Listed below are some of the more common exams offered to graduate program prospects:
- The Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
An exam that many graduate schools require you to sit for. THE GRE General Test lets you take the test and send only the scores you want schools to see.
- The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
Required if you plan on applying into an MBA program. Over 2,000 schools around the world accept the GMAT as a benchmark standard for MBA programs.
- The Law School Admissions Test (LSAT)
The standardized test for prospective law school candidates. It's written in two parts: a multiplte choice section, and a written essay, both of which can be done online.
- The Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT)
If you're looking to enter medical school, this standardized test is required for many institutions. Scores are measured in four broad sections: biology, chemistry, psychology, and critical thinking.
Some other common professional exams include:
The Optometry Admission Test (OAT), the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT), and the Dental Admission Test (DAT).
Checking each testing authority's website is a great way to gain a lay of the land and better understand expectations, see exam schedules, and find what fees are associated with the exam. Knowing this information can allow you to better start preparing for your exam.
Make sure to also carefully read the website of the institution you wish to apply to. Some schools may have different or extra requirements, so be as well-prepared as possible when you finally do decide to submit your application.
Good luck and happy test taking!
