GradSteps – Student Workshops
The Faculty of Graduate Studies, in collaboration with various academic and student support units both on and off campus, worked diligently to create a graduate student workshop series known as GradSteps. These not-for-credit workshops are designed to help graduate students navigate their programs and prepare them to transfer their skills and knowledge into the workplace; whether that be a traditional academic setting, or a for-profit or not-for-profit organization.
“The majority of Master’s and Doctoral students find careers outside of the academia. Ensuring graduate students have the appropriate professional and soft skills is essential to preparing them for the transition from graduate school to a fulfilling and promising career” according to Jay Doering, Vice-Provost (Graduate Education) and Dean (Graduate Studies).
To date over 100 workshops are available to U of M students. Most are lunchtime (1-2 hour) sessions, with topics ranging from “NSERC Grant Writing” and “Copyright & Your Thesis” through to “How to Write a Literature Review” and “Resume or CV? How to Market Your Skills.”
Some of the positive feedback for the workshops includes one student who stated, “The interactive engaging conversations amongst the group were well guided and on target with the audience.”
