Description:This program provides students with the opportunity to complete a BA (Honors) in Catholic Studies for Teachers and, if desired, another major of their choice with guaranteed admission to Western’s Faculty of Education to complete the Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree. This program is intended for preparation for teaching in the Catholic school system. Students can choose either the Junior Intermediate or the Intermediate-Senior streams in the BEd program.

In Years 2, 3, and 4 of the BA (Honors) or four-year BA program, students complete Religious Studies courses in Catholic studies in areas as diverse as Scriptures, Catholic symbols, tradition and morality, issues in religion, Judaism and Islam or Eastern Traditions. Students will also register in service learning courses in which they will be placed in Catholic schools to assist teachers in the classroom as well as work in other parts of the school (such as the library, special education) to get an overall view of the educational institution as a whole and its culture. Students will receive extensive orientation before their placements and will also have regular meetings with the program coordinator throughout their time in the schools.

Admission Requirements

  •  Grade12 English 

For admission to this program, applicants are required to have completed first-year requirements with an overall average of at least 75% on at least 5.0 courses including Religious Studies 1027E and the required first-year course for a declared second teachable subject. Philosophy 1300E or 1150E is highly recommended.

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 85] or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment [min. 60] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 6.5] or Test of Written English (part of TOEFL) [min. 4.5]

Admission to this program will be determined by King’s according to the agreement with Western’s Faculty of Education and will be based on grades as well as additional criteria. Students will be asked to complete a supplementary application which includes a personal statement outlining why they want to become a teacher; a resume describing volunteerism, extra-curricular activities, part-time work and community service which demonstrates their interest and skills related to teaching; a reference letter(s) from a teacher, counsellor, chaplain or principal; a letter from their parish priest or chaplain confirming their commitment to their faith which is a requirement for employment in the Catholic school system and is essential for fulfillment of the service learning component of the program; an applicant must also indicate their preference for either the Junior Intermediate or Intermediate Senior stream in the BEd program in their supplementary application.
