A Humber College student prepares the perfect resume.

Many new students will be looking for part-time jobs to help pay their tuition and other expenses. There is no shortage of positions on and off campus to pursue, but before you apply to any, follow these tips to ensure your resume is ready to go.

Education

Ensure to include the program name and postsecondary institution that you intend on attending. This will give employers a better idea of what skills you will be developing through your program. Along with your high school diploma information, mention any academic achievements or awards that you received. You can also include any courses you have taken that relate to the job you're applying for.

Work experience

Read the job posting closely to learn the skills and experience the employer is looking for. Think of examples from your prior work experience that demonstrates that you have those skills. For example, if you were a cashier, emphasize your customer service and numerical skills.

Here are two other tips to consider when you're listing your work experience:

  • Quantify as much relevant information as possible (e.g. Served over 100 customers a day).
  • Use action verbs when listing achievements (e.g. I supervised 13 cashiers at a time).

By using these two tips, you can highlight your experience for prospective employers and demonstrate the impact on your previous organizations.

Extracurricular Activities

When you don't have a lot of work experience to include on your resume, it can be useful to mention any extracurricular activities you have taken part of, such as, clubs, sports teams, or volunteer work. These activities can help demonstrate skills and abilities that you possess, particularly if you took a leadership role (e.g. Treasurer of your Student Council).
