Beating Stress: Dealing with the Pressures of College

If you're feeling stressed about school, you're not alone. Humber College offers a number of student support services to help you find ways to cope with the stress and succeed in your studies.

Here are some tips to help overcome and handle stress effectively:

Organize your material

This might sound like an obvious one, but it's a step students shouldn't overlook. The average full-time college student may take up to five courses each semester. Each course has its own requirements for assignments, midterms, and final exams.

Throughout the course of a semester, it's easy for notes and files to be lost along the way. To stay organized, make sure to have a clear system for where you will be accessing all of your study materials for your exams. Humber College offers Microsoft 365, and one TB of OneDrive cloud space, for all students making it easier to store notes and files in an easily accessible manner.

Time management

Whether it's setting up a healthy sleep schedule, fitting in time to exercise, or arranging time for peer study group sessions, planning out how you'll manage your time is an important step towards success.

Know when to take breaks. Overexerting your brain by studying long hours will in return make you tired and forgetful. Create a realistic study schedule. Figure out how many hours per week best suits your study style and stick to the plan. Make sure you don't overlap your tasks and obligations to prevent stress as best as possible.

Practice good self-care

While studying is important, setting time aside to take a walk, get a full night's sleep, and eat a well-balanced meal with friends and family will help to manage your stress levels with a positive, well-rested mindset.

Feeling overwhelmed and stressed is common for many students. This is why Humber understands that having support systems and ways to combat the stress should always be within hands reach for students. Humber offers counselling services to provide support and work with students to achieve their goals in a timely manner.
