| Field of Study: | Nuclear Medical Technology/Technologist
|
| Description: | Nuclear medicine uses radiopharmaceuticals (radioactive drugs) and specialized instruments to help diagnose and treat disease through the evaluation of the function of the various body organs. In the Nuclear Medicine Technology (NMT) program, students will learn the techniques of imaging, laboratory procedures and equipment operation to prepare them to work with patients and medical staff in a nuclear medicine department.
In the first year of the Nuclear Medicine Technology program, students will undertake detailed studies in laboratory arithmetic, physics, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, radionuclide instrumentation, nuclear medicine procedures, radiopharmacy and radiation safety. The second year of the NMT program involves three clinical practica in which students will rotate through all areas of a nuclear medicine department. To support their learning, students are required to participate in online courses throughout the program. Online courses will be a part of the didactic first and second year and will also help to supplement the second year practicum experience. Students will require access to a computer with Internet access, a printer, a set of headphones, and a microphone. |
