Continuing Ben’s legacy of benevolence, intelligence and talent.

Supporting students continuing their education in writing, music or fitness.

We were devastated by the loss of our 17-year-old son Ben on June 21, 2019. Many people have comforted us with stories of Ben’s kindness to them and we wanted to continue his legacy with a scholarship fund to help students pursuing post-secondary education in Ben’s favourite subjects. Ben’s interests were many and varied. He was a very talented drummer, a skilled hockey player and a gifted writer so we have decided to grant the scholarships in these subjects.

Writer’s Craft

Ben loved to write and talked about making a career of writing. Ben was notorious for his huge vocabulary. Ben and I were grammar nerds and loved to point out when people on television or movies used words we hated such as “addicting” and “a myriad” of something. Click the button below if you are pursuing an education in Writing or English and would like to apply for a scholarship.

Hockey and Fitness

Ben loved to play hockey and workout at the gym. Ben was hooked on hockey from the age of 4 and his Dad and I attended almost every game he played with his Dad often coaching his teams. Within the last few years, he enjoyed working out at the gym or using his hand weights at home and everyone noticed the results. We spent quite a bit of time in Popeye’s picking out protein powders and creatine so Ben could maximize his workouts. Ben also played volleyball on his high school volleyball team. While playing in the finals last year, Ben’s teammates said they were playing for him and they knew he was with them and then went on to win a pivotal game.

Drumming and Music

Ben discovered his love of drumming when he was very small and we would play Rock Band as a family. I can still picture his tiny little foot on that kick drum pedal and how Ben was playing at expert level when I was struggling with medium. We bought him a small electric drumming pad but before long he was moving up to a full sized kit. Ben also had very eclectic taste in music which was influenced by his Dad and Max as well as me and current trends with his own fun picks thrown in. He would listen to anything from Tragically Hip and Big Wreck to Earth, Wind & Fire’s September and Led Zeppelin to Elton John’s, Tiny Dancer.
