Please join us in taking a moment to congratulate Nate Harris, the winner of the 2023 Darren L. Buium scholarship! The award is worth $1,500 and comes from EECOL Electric.

Nate's originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, but he's now a student at the University of British Columbia, pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Sciences degree in engineering.

Nate's volunteered at two local food banks, organizing a student-led food collection campaign for the Winnipeg Community Fridge. He also started up a collection drive to gather socks for people experiencing homelessness — socks are among the most sought-after items at shelters. He's proud that he took initiative, inspiring and empowering his peers to support their community. Kudos, Nate!

The Darren L. Buium Scholarship

This scholarship is modeled and inspired by its namesake, former EECOL president, Darren L. Buium, who believes that if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life. The award is meant to support a first-year engineering or construction student, to reduce the burden of financial need and make education more accessible.

Nate says, "I'm a student, athlete, volunteer, son, brother, and friend. I am focused on an education that gives me the knowledge needed to make a difference every day in my career ... As a proud Winnipegger, it was a difficult decision to move to Vancouver to attend UBC for their Applied Science program. However, the idea of receiving an Integrated Engineering Degree so that I can combine disciplines to broaden my studies was an opportunity I couldn't resist."
