My TMU Scholarship Story: Micaela

Hello! My name is Micaela Pantoja. I was born and raised in Lima, Peru, and I am a third-year International Economics and Finance student at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). As a recipient of TMU's International Student Leadership Award (ISLA) – Winter (formerly known as the International Student Winter Merit Scholarship), I'm sharing my story of why I applied and some advice about writing a competitive application!

Why I applied

I applied for a scholarship because I wanted to help my parents with my university costs. Before applying, I had concerns about whether my achievements would stand out. To overcome these fears, I focused on showcasing not just my academic record but also my unique qualities and experiences.

Application process

The application process itself was straightforward. I wrote a 500-word personal statement that showcased my character and extracurricular activities. I showed passion for international economics, which helped me build a compelling application, but I also highlighted leadership in sports and volunteer activities that supported my community, school, and fellow students. I sought guidance from mentors and revised my application multiple times to ensure it effectively conveyed my story.

Receiving the scholarship

When I found out I received the scholarship, I felt a mix of relief, gratitude, and excitement! This was a validation of my hard work and dedication, and it alleviated some of the financial pressures associated with my education. Knowing that I could contribute to my university costs was a significant relief for both me and my family.

My advice for applicants

  • Research requirements thoroughly and tailor your application to showcase your achievements, goals, and how the scholarship aligns with your aspirations.
  • Highlight academic achievements and extracurriculars to show a well-rounded profile and personal qualities.
  • Craft a compelling personal statement that reflects your passion, commitment, and the impact the scholarship will have on your education.
  • Proofread your application to ensure clarity and correctness.

Contributions and co-op experience

I have lived up to TMU's faith in me by contributing back to the community! I'm the founder and president of TMU Women in Finance, a team lead of the Ted Rogers Sales & Trading Club, and a senior analyst of Investa Insights, an intercollegiate investment club with 11 chapters at leading Canadian business universities.

My decision to join TMU has also been rewarded with unique Co-op opportunities. Last summer, I was immersed in the dynamic world of payment processing at Moneris as an Enterprise Risk Management Co-op Analyst. This upcoming summer, I will embark on a new adventure as a Global Markets Summer Associate at TD Securities.

Final thoughts

In the end, awards committees look for students who have genuine passions and interests and evaluate how these students can contribute to the TMU community. I truly hope this helps reduce your stress. Wishing you the best of luck on your entrance scholarship applications! Show off your passion and potential, and may success accompany you on this exciting academic journey. Best of luck—you got this!
