When it comes to successful learning, the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) knows that there's more to it than sitting in a classroom. We deliver undergraduate and graduate courses in various formats to cater to different learning needs and present course content from all angles.
UNBC is recognized nationally and internationally for our approach to innovative and impactful instruction including as one of the top universities in Canada by Maclean’s Magazine, top 5% of post-secondary educators according to Times Higher Education, and more.
Among the most common academic components are lectures, labs, tutorials, and electives. Understanding their roles can help students make the most of their UNBC academic experience.
Lectures
Lectures are the backbone of UNBC courses. Usually held in large halls, they are led by professors who deliver key theoretical content. These sessions often involve limited interaction, focusing instead on explaining concepts, introducing topics, and outlining course material. Students are expected to take notes and engage with the material outside of class.
Labs
Labs, or laboratory sessions, are typically associated with science, engineering, language or technical courses. These hands-on sessions allow students to apply the theory they've learned in lectures. In labs, UNBC students conduct experiments, use specialized equipment, and develop practical skills under the supervision of lab instructors or teaching assistants. UNBC lab facilities offer the latest in contemporary technical equipment.
Tutorials
Tutorials are smaller, discussion-based classes designed to deepen understanding of the course content. Led by UNBC teaching assistants or tutors, tutorials provide opportunities to ask questions, work through problems, and engage in discussions. They are especially useful for reviewing complex material from lectures and preparing for exams or assignments.
Electives
Electives differ from the other formats in that they are optional courses chosen by UNBC students, often outside their primary area of study. Electives allow students to explore new interests, develop additional skills, or fulfill credit requirements. For example, a computer science major might take a psychology elective to broaden their understanding of human behavior.
A day in the life
A day in the life of a UNBC student may include a lecture for foundational knowledge, lab for hands-on practice, tutorial that reinforces learning through discussion, or an elective to expand academic horizons.
Apply to UNBC today and prepare for a well-rounded education that balances theory, application, and exploration.
