Hey future Golden Hawks – I’m Timna!
I’m heading into my fourth year of Communication Studies and Cultural Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. As I get closer to finishing my degree (insane!!), the questions about “what comes next” have returned full force.
Back in grade 12 when applying to arts programs, I remember hearing the doubts: What will this degree do for you? How will it get you a job? Are you sure this is the right choice?
Here’s what I learned: an arts degree can lead to so many successful outcomes! Whether you want to jump right into the workforce or continue studying, a degree in the Arts provides you with lots of options.
1. Gain real-world experience with co-op
Co-op has been one of the most impactful parts of my Laurier experience. With access to hundreds of job postings, plus a prep course that sets you up for future success, co-op connects you with real opportunities.
My placements helped me build new skills, expand my professional network and gave me the confidence to apply what I’ve learned in the classroom to real-world settings.
2. Get the best of both worlds with the BA + MBA pathway
Want to follow your passion for the arts but still gain foundational knowledge in business? Laurier’s Bachelor of Arts (BA) + Master of Business Administration (MBA) pathway may be your perfect fit. Start your degree in Honours Arts and receive a conditional offer into our MBA program through the AACSB-Accredited Lazaridis School of Business & Economics.
3. Pursue a career in law with BA + LLB/JD pathways
Laurier offers two partnership programs that let you earn both your Bachelor of Arts and a law degree – either a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Sussex or a Juris Doctor (JD) from Cardiff University.
These pathways guarantee you a spot in law school alongside your undergraduate offer (as long as you meet the conditional requirements during your studies) and no LSAT is required!
4. Further your education with BA+MA pathways: NEW
Take your learning one step further with a conditional offer to a Master of Arts (MA) program. When applying to these pathway programs, you can choose from one of ten BA+MA options here at Laurier, or explore one of our international partnerships for unique graduate opportunities overseas.
Right now, I’m considering graduate school, and I can see how this conditional offer for a BA+MA would have given me clearer direction earlier on. It would have been reassuring to know I had a built-in next step if I wanted it. Looking back, this kind of option would have made planning my future feel less overwhelming.
5. Combine creativity and academics with the Vancouver Film School partnership
Through Laurier’s Vancouver Film School (VFS) partnership program, you can earn a VFS diploma and a BA (Honours) in English or Film Studies — all in just four years!
With all these pathways, you know you’ll be set up for success after graduation. Laurier’s Faculty of Arts has got your back – I’ve seen it in my own journey, and I can’t wait to see where yours takes you!
