On-campus vs. off-campus housing: What's right for you?

When deciding where to live, you'll need to consider whether on-campus or off-campus housing is the right choice for you.

  • On-campus residence provides a unique opportunity to build community, stay close to classes and immerse yourself in student life.
  • Off-campus housing may offer more independence and flexibility, including the opportunity to manage your own schedule, commute and responsibilities.

Residence options across York's three campuses

York University has 10 residences spread across its three campuses: Keele, Glendon, and Markham. Each campus offers different housing options to suit a range of preferences.

  • Keele Campus: York's largest campus, with several residence buildings.
  • Glendon Campus: A bilingual campus offering a more intimate and quiet residence experience.
  • Markham Campus: A modern campus with new residence options designed for students studying in this academic space.

Types of residences at York

York offers a range of residence types, each with its own features and amenities. Your choice depends on your personal preferences for privacy, community and facilities:

  • Traditional rooms (single or double): These rooms have a classic dorm-style setup, typically with shared bathrooms on your floor. Single rooms house one student, while double rooms house two. This option offers a great balance between privacy and socializing.
  • Suite-style: Suite-style residences provide more privacy, featuring shared living spaces and private bathrooms for each suite.
  • Hybrid-style: These blend elements of traditional and suite-style living. Hybrid-style rooms are shared with 2-4 students in multiple bedrooms, called Clusters. Each Cluster has a semi-private bathroom.

Residence is the perfect place to meet new people, engage with campus life, and make the most of your university experience.

Don't forget to apply early for guaranteed housing.
