It's totally normal to feel nervous about making friends in university. Everything's changing around you. You're the “new kid” again. But you're not alone. Many other first-year students feel the way you do.
So, how do you make friends in university? It's easier than you think.
Put yourself in the way of friends
First things first: to make friends, you'll want to see them. So put your phone away. And while we're at it, take your headphones off too. Okay, now you're ready.
Four easy ways to connect
Here are four quick, easy, low-impact ways to break the ice and start building connections:
1. Say hi to your neighbours
After you sit down in class, introduce yourself to the people beside you. It might feel awkward at first, but you'll be glad you did it (and so will they). After all, you'll be seeing a lot of each other in the next few months. You can do this outside the classroom too. At ULethbridge, REC Rooms are a great place for students to meet between classes over activities like puzzles and ping-pong.
2. Ask people questions
You don't go from zero to besties without getting to know each other first. Start simple: Where are you from? What's your major? What do you think of this class so far? When someone asks you something, don't give a one-word answer. Share a bit, then ask a question back. Two-way conversations go a long way.
3. Say yes to invites
Sometimes we get in our own way and miss chances to meet interesting people. Step or tiptoe (no judgment) outside your comfort zone. Sign up for that email list. Join a study session. Check out that club. Go to a Pronghorns game at ULethbridge. If you're feeling extra brave, be the one who invites. It'll boost your confidence.
4. Go to events
Universities have tons of events, clubs and activities. Why? To bring students together. Attend new student orientation, first-week activities, and events put on by your students' union. At ULethbridge, student wellness ambassadors host events like Art Hive, a drop-in space for students to create and connect. It's a
low-risk way to make new friends. Plus, it'll take the edge off all the studying you'll be doing!
Keep going
Making friends in university can feel intimidating at first, but it gets easier with practice. Take small steps — start a conversation or join a club — and you'll see how easy it is to start building connections.
And remember, other students are feeling nervous and looking for connection too. It's all part of the university experience. You've got this.
