Description:The PhD program is designed to train students in advanced research in health sciences, and to provide them with the skills, content area expertise, analytical and critical-thinking capabilities required to pursue original research relevant to health. Consistent with the mandate and objectives of the FHS mission, the PhD program will introduce students to interdisciplinary approaches to research that will encourage them to develop cross-disciplinary research skills. Areas of disciplinary emphasis in the Faculty include: social science, epidemiology, biostatistics, policy analysis, ethics and laboratory-based biomedical science.

Admission Requirements

Test Scores:
  • International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 7] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 580] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 93]

Applicants whose primary language is not English must demonstrate command of English sufficient to pursue graduate studies at SFU through the completion of an English language competency examination with the below minimum scores. Examinations must be taken within two years of the application deadline, and results must be valid at the time of the deadline. IELTS Academic Test (International English Language Testing Service) - a minimum overall score of 7 is required with a minimum score of 6.5 in each section of the academic (NOT general) test; TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - a minimum overall score of 93 is required for the internet based test with a minimum score of 20 in each section; a minimum score of 580 is required for the paper based test.
