DescriptionExpertise in modern languages has never been more important as the United Kingdom forges a new relationship with its European partners and seeks to develop its trading and cultural ties throughout the world. The University of Bristol is a thriving centre for the study of modern languages and cultures, with a vibrant learning environment and state-of-the-art multimedia centre. This Joint Honours degree enables you to develop your French knowledge and language skills beyond A-level while also studying German, either as a beginner or building on existing knowledge. French at Bristol has particular strengths in the relationship between visual, musical and literary cultures, while German has strengths in social and cultural history and linguistics.

You will achieve a high degree of fluency and accuracy in written and oral registers in both French and German, and study the history, literature and culture of countries where they are spoken. Many students find that studying two languages makes them stronger linguists. In language classes, you will develop speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation skills using a range of textbooks, media and internet resources. You will spend half of your third year in a French-speaking country and the other half in a German-speaking country, undertaking study or work placements.
