DescriptionThis course offers you both depth and breadth over three years of exciting and challenging study.

In the first year you will gain a grounding in the fundamentals of philosophy through two mandatory introductory units, one exploring issues in epistemology and metaphysics, such as knowledge, scepticism, and the distinction between appearance and reality, and the other concerning moral and political philosophy. You will also take units in critical thinking and logic, and a choice of other units, which have previously included Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Mind, and Mill's On Liberty. You may take open units outside the department in your first year. In year two, you complete your foundation in philosophy with mandatory units that cover issues across the subject, as well as choosing units that go into much more depth about a particular area such as philosophy of language or ethics. In the final year there are independent study units in which you can study almost any topic in philosophy, writing an extended essay in consultation with a supervisor. There are also taught units that relate directly to the research interests of staff in areas from global justice to philosophy of physics.
