DescriptionExpertise in modern languages has never been more important as the United Kingdom forges a new relationship with its European partners and seeks to develop its trading and cultural ties throughout the world. The University of Bristol is a successful and respected centre for the study of modern languages and cultures. Our Joint Honours degree in German and Russian enables you to study two of the most crucial cultures in contemporary Europe.

Russia continues to assert itself as an independent, powerful, political and economic force, and Germany remains central to the European economy. There is high demand for advanced fluency in these languages and familiarity with the diverse nature of the culture, history, politics and lifestyle of the Russian and German-speaking world. You will take units in both languages in year one and choose from a range of options in your second and final years, combining cultural, historical and sociological approaches. In language classes you will develop speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation skills using a range of textbooks, media and internet resources. You will divide your third year between a German-speaking country and Russia, either studying or on a work placement. Languages students in Bristol have access to a state-of-the-art multimedia centre.
