DescriptionExpertise in modern languages has never been more important as the United Kingdom forges a new relationship with its European partners and seeks to develop its trading and cultural ties throughout the world. The University of Bristol is a respected and successful centre for the study of modern languages and cultures. Our Joint Honours degree in German and Spanish enables you to explore two of the richest and most varied cultures in Europe.

Spanish is the second most widely spoken European language in the world and is the second language of the USA. Germany remains central to the European economy and will remain a major trading partner of the UK. There is high demand for advanced fluency in these languages and familiarity with the diverse nature of the culture, history, politics and lifestyle of the German and Spanish-speaking world. In language classes you will develop speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation skills using a range of textbooks, media and internet resources. You will divide your third year between a German-speaking country and a Spanish-speaking country. Studying a modern language, in the context of its speakers' history, literature, experience and outlooks, broadens horizons and challenges preconceptions, including about one's own language and country.
