DescriptionLiterary critics are often concerned with how historical forces shape poems, plays and novels, while historians are interested in how literary texts shape cultural and political history. This joint honours course aims to develop your interest in and knowledge and understanding of the relationship between literature and history, distinct but complementary disciplines. You will join two large departments with top researchers in a great diversity of fields and will be encouraged to develop expertise and research skills relevant to both disciplines while also considering the relationships between them.

Mandatory units encouraging analysis of the links between the two disciplines and optional units offered across English and History departments will allow you to explore interests in specific chronological periods of writing and history while also developing more subject-specific skills. You will take an English and history dissertation during your final year, a project that will ask you to bring together the skills you have developed while studying both disciplines.
