DescriptionExpertise in modern languages has never been more important as the United Kingdom forges a new relationship with its European partners and seeks to develop its trading and cultural ties throughout the world. The University of Bristol offers an outstanding environment in which to study modern languages at degree level. A BA in German at Bristol will give you a high level of fluency and accuracy in modern spoken and written German. In addition to gaining this high level of linguistic proficiency, you will cultivate a thorough understanding and appreciation of the rich diversity of German culture.

Following a broad introduction in the first year, you will choose from a wide range of options in your second and fourth years. These include classical and contemporary literature, film, drama, linguistics and modern political and social history. Our teaching reflects the ground-breaking research interests of our academic staff. There are also plenty of opportunities to complement and compare elements of your specialism in German with options from the School of Modern Languages including translation studies and comparative approaches to literature, film, and history. As a major centre for research into German culture, we have a regular programme of visiting speakers who complement our regular teaching with specialist talks on their research interests. All German degrees include a period of residence abroad during the third year, either as a teaching assistant, as a student at a partner university in Germany or Austria, or on a work placement.
