Ontario Government to Offer Memorial Scholarships Honouring Crash Victims
57 Canadians lost their lives January 8, 2020, in a tragic crash outside Tehran.
The Ontario Government has announced a new scholarship program to honour the memories of those killed in the tragic plane crash outside Tehran. On January 8, 2020, 176 people lost their lives, including 57 Canadians — many of whom were students and instructors at educational institutions across the country.
The proposed program includes 57 scholarships of $10,000 each — one for each Canadian victim. Criteria is likely to be open-ended, based on financial need and academic merit. 34 of the awards will be set for the institutions with which the victims were affiliated, with the rest allocated to other eligible schools.
The Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities is aiming to have these scholarships ready for the 2020-2021 academic year. More details will be available in the coming weeks, and we'll keep you updated.
